Research data shows that most day traders are not profitable. Below are studies that reinforce this:
● In a 2014 paper titled “Do Day Traders Rationally Learn About Their Ability?”, professors from the University of California analyzed 3.7 billion trades and found that only 9.81% of day trading volume came from predictably profitable traders — less than 3% of day traders on any given day.
● In the Journal of Applied Finance (2005), researchers at the University of Oxford and University College Dublin reviewed 1,146 U.S. trading accounts. Only 50% were profitable, with an average net gain of $16,619.
● In The Profitability of Day Traders (2003), a Financial Analysts Journal article revealed that only 35% of traders were profitable during the studied period, and just 14% earned over $10,000.
These independent studies highlight the high-risk nature of day trading and the reality that many traders lose money. Success is far from guaranteed.
